CASE STUDY - Full Shot Production

PIXM was brought on board to deliver complete visual effects for two high-end commercials featuring Audi in collaboration with Vogue. The project demanded premium-quality visuals, extensive 3D worldbuilding, and a seamless compositing pipeline to match luxury-brand standards.

Background

The commercials required fully CG-created environments — one set during a high-contrast futuristic night mood, and the other in a bright, elegant daytime look.


Before PIXM joined, the client had explored options with another vendor but was not satisfied with the compositing and overall visual quality.

PIXM conducted an internal test shot that aligned perfectly with the creative expectations, leading the client to entrust both commercials to us.

Challenges Before PIXM Joined

The project came with a few structural challenges:

  • No final art references or clear concept direction for the environments

  • Iterative back-and-forth approvals during initial creative development

  • Massive dependency on 3D renders for both scenes

  • Tight delivery timelines for broadcast-level commercials

  • Full environment creation from scratch without pre-existing assets

  • Editorial plates and scans required cleanup and standardized naming

Despite these hurdles, PIXM established a strong creative and technical workflow early in the project.

PIXM’s Contribution and Solutions

1. Full 3D Environment Creation (Day & Night Worlds)

PIXM built both commercial environments entirely from the ground up:

  • Night Scene: Futuristic lighting, reflections, metallic structures, and stylized city elements

  • Day Scene: Clean architectural spaces, bright tones, realistic skylight simulation

We developed a custom look-dev for both worlds to ensure consistency across shots.

2. Premium-Level Compositing & Finishing

Our compositing team ensured:

  • Accurate integration of talent + car plates

  • Realistic lighting, reflections, refractions

  • Seamless blending of CG with practical elements

  • Final beauty passes for a high-fashion aesthetic

Both films required a polished, luxury-driven output matching the Audi x Vogue brand style.

3. Roto & Paint

We delivered:

  • High-quality roto for talent and car

  • Paint cleanup for plates

  • Removal of unwanted reflections and artifacts

  • Edge detail preservation for realistic blend with CG

4. Editorial Cleanup & DI Support

Before production work began, PIXM:

  • Normalized plate naming and folder structure

  • Cleaned and organized editorial references

  • Managed DI workflow for look consistency

  • Maintained a unified color pipeline across both films

5. Render Management in Chaotic Conditions

The night environment required heavy render passes, and some render delays created bottlenecks. PIXM responded by:

  • Adjusting render schedules

  • Setting up fallback strategies

  • Optimizing look-dev to reduce render load

  • Rebalancing internal tasks to maintain delivery velocity

This ensured progress despite unpredictable 3D rendering challenges.

6. Smooth Execution on the Second Film

Once the night commercial was completed, our refined workflow significantly accelerated production for the day scene.
The second commercial was delivered smoothly with minimal revisions.

Outcome

PIXM delivered two high-end commercials that met and exceeded the client's expectations for quality.

The final films showcased:
